Teachers working at secondary level I work with pupils aged between 11 and 15. This phase of life represents a central moment in the development of the individual, who is confronted with the definition of his or her identity and important choices for his or her educational and professional future. 

To best support this course, the teacher must have a solid didactic and pedagogical background and excellent interpersonal and listening skills. 

The teacher's duties include:
  • the creation and implementation of lessons, teaching and assessment activities to foster learning for all pupils;
  • the care of communication and collaboration with pupils, colleagues and families;
  • the development of transversal skills;
  • the development of a reflective practice, attitude and a career-long focus on research;
  • attention to the acceptance, inclusion and accessibility aspects of school and social life;
  • the care of the ethical and deontological perspective on sociological aspects within the profession.

Professional prospects 
The qualification is federally recognised and enables the teaching profession to be exercised at secondary I level in all Swiss cantons. 
 
Study prospects
At the end of the Master's course, teachers active regionally can specialise by attending other university Master's courses, such as the Master's in Specialised Pedagogy and Inclusive Didactics, or access doctoral courses. 
In addition, they may attend Continuing Education courses (CAS, DAS, MAS) offered by Swiss or foreign universities, such as the CAS Teacher of Professional Practice in Teacher Education offered by SUPSI.

In the two or three years of the Master's programme in Secondary Education, teaching-learning takes place as follows:
  • theoretical lectures 
  • small group workshops 
  • professional practice at a Ticino school

The training is structured around the following main themes: 
  • professional practice in the classroom 
  • educational sciences; 
  • the didactics of the discipline to be taught; 
  • scientific research in education;
  • the Master's thesis.

Teaching is structured in modules. There are several types of certification.

For some subjects such as natural sciences or visual and plastic arts education, an additional 10 ECTS are included in the 2nd year for Disciplinary Education.

For training in two disciplines, there are an additional 14 ECTS for Professional Module 2 and, in special cases, 10 ECTS for Disciplinary Didactics .

One ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit corresponds to approximately 25-30 hours of work for the student (classroom hours, individual study and certification hours).

The Master's programme in in Teaching for Secondary I is offered on a part-time (PT) basis. 

Classes and professional practice generally take place three days a week, with a minimum attendance of 80% required for most modules. 

For those training in one discipline, the Master's degree lasts two years (four semesters). In the case of training to teach two disciplines the duration is three years (six semesters) with the exception of two second languages, in which case the duration is normally two years (four semesters).

Training to teach one discipline leads to the acquisition of, as a rule, 96 ECTS credits, in the case of training in two disciplines the ECTS credits are, as a rule, 120.

SUPSI Image Focus

In order to attend the Master's programme in Secondary Education, the candidate must meet specific formal requirements.

Admission to the course is subject to a numbered admission procedure.
 

Qualification
The candidate must hold a university Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
Holders of certain UAS diplomas who meet the requirements described under 'Disciplinary credits' may also be admitted.

Disciplinary credits
The candidate must be in possession of a certificate certifying the achievement of:

  • at least 110 ECTS in the discipline you intend to teach, in the case of teaching only one discipline;
  • at least 60 ECTS for each discipline to be taught, in the case of teaching two disciplines;
 

In addition to the above, the candidate's university-certified disciplinary training must cover a number of subject areas described in the document "Areas of university training required for admission to the Master's programme in Secondary Education".

Disciplinary remedial mathematics
For the discipline of Mathematics, it is possible to make up any missing subject credits through internal courses offered by SUPSI, to be attended in parallel with regular training. Detailed information is provided in the document "Application guidelines Master's in Secondary Education".

Other Requirements 
Specific requirements are required of candidates who are not native Italian speakers and of candidates who wish to teach foreign languages or physical education. For detailed information on these requirements, please refer to the document "Application Guidelines Master's in Secondary Education ".

The admission procedure involves ranking examinations and, where required, additional examinations.

The application for admission can only be submitted online by accessing the Student Portal.

Candidates who meet the admission requirements verified on the basis of the documents provided are admitted to the admission procedure.

Final registration is required by the deadline.

Final registration is only confirmed when the candidate has:

  • completed and returned the required documents;
  • paid the six-monthly fee.

Application fee
A fee of CHF 200 must be paid online at the same time as the application. 
The fee is neither refundable nor deductible from the six-monthly fee.
Semester fee
The semester fee is CHF 1600, respectively CHF 800 for students benefiting from the application of the Intercantonal Agreement on Universities of Applied Sciences ASUP (Swiss nationality or civil and fiscal domicile in Switzerland or Liechtenstein). Specific agreements apply for students resident in Campione d'Italia.
Contribution for teaching
A flat fee of CHF 80 per semester is also required as a contribution to teaching costs.

FAQs List

Open days/evenings are held between January and March each year, during which, for example, the content of the course, professional outlets and the admission procedure are presented. It is also possible to visit the campus and meet directly with students and lecturers.

You can take a semester an maximum one year at another university in Switzerland or abroad through related agreements. Find more information and reference contacts on the dedicated page.

They are a contribution to the costs of teaching (school materials, charges for visits, general administrative and secretarial costs, teaching and IT support, etc.).

Following the Bologna Reform, study courses have been structured into modules and each module is allocated a number of study credits according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). One ECTS credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 to 30 hours. 60 credits represent the annual workload in the case of full-time education. A Bachelor's degree requires 180 ECTS and a Master's degree 90 to 120 ECTS.
