Ph.D. Student (w/m) in Communication/Media in the domain of Information Literacy

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), in collaboration with the Department of Media and Communication Research (IKMZ) at the University Zurich (UZH), opens a doctoral position in Communication/Media within the project Late-teenagers Online Information Search (LOIS) funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS/SNF). The doctoral student will work at the Department of education and learning (DFA) in Locarno and at the Department of Media and Communication Research (IKMZ) at the University Zurich (UZH). This is a full-time position (100 %) for a limited 3-year contract.

Context

The doctoral student will be part of the research team of the LOIS project, which aims to investigate the online information search practices of late teenagers (age 16-20) through a novel approach based on navigation tracking and data mining. The project outcomes intend to support the development of sound and effective information literacy education practices for both formal and informal education.
The LOIS project led by prof. Luca Botturi, is a collaboration of the Department of education and learning, of the Department of innovative technologies of SUPSI and of the Pädagogische Hochschule Schwyz (PHSZ). The doctoral student will be matriculated at the Department of Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich (IMKZ) and supervised by prof. Thomas Friemel and prof. Luca Botturi.

Tasks

The doctoral student will be engaged in the development of online information search tasks and scenarios in Italian and German, and, in collaboration with data mining experts, in online navigation data collection and analysis. For the dissemination and valorisation activities of the project, s/he will be involved in academic presentations and articles, and in the design and development of Open educational resources.
The position starts in January 2020, with a foreseen duration of 36 months. The main place of work is Locarno.

Requirements

  • Master degree in Media and Communication Sciences. Degrees in Education, Information Sciences will also be considered, but candidates will be required to take additional courses during the PhD program. Previous experience with topics or activities related to Information Literacy represent an added value.
  • Fluency in the use of digital tools is required.
  • Working knowledge in Italian and German and good command of English are necessary for this position.
  • Team working and collaboration skills; attitude to independent work, flexibility and motivation.
