Environment & Energy


This application area covers the use of ICT for energy monitoring and environmental monitoring applications. Moreover, it strives to boost the energy-efficiency of ICT while also using ICT to boost the energy-efficiency of non-ICT systems.

Key research topics include:

  • The use of ICT to monitor environmental phenomena.
  • The use of ICT to run energy systems, including smart grid applications and energy storage systems.
  • The maximization of the energy-efficiency of ICT systems.         
  • The greening of cloud computing, mainly through the exploitation of opportunistic computing and offloading techniques that leverage the vast availability of computing devices in our surroundings.
  • The maximization of the energy-efficiency of wireless communication protocols, with a specific focus on resource-constrained communication networks.

The E2 application area can leverage an extensive know-how that has been developed through ISIN’s participation in several national and international research projects.

  • ICT applications to environmental monitoring (such as the implementation of the Environmental Observatory of Southern Switzerland in partnership with the Ticino Cantonal Government).
  • Development and application of energy-efficient computing models.
  • Design and development of energy-efficient communication schemes for low-power radio technologies and emerging wireless technologies.
  • Modeling and simulation of ICT-augmented smart energy systems.
  • Design and developments of algorithms to extract actionable intelligence from cyber-physical systems.
