Engineering Summer School 2022

Hand on Industrial IoT: Mastering the Mini-Factory / 3 ECTS

18-22 July, Lugano

The summer school proposes a one-week intensive lab experience, in a state-of-the-art i4.0 automated production environment. Students will be offered a unique hands-on insight on the most modern manufacturing automation technologies, plant supervision and simulation techniques.

The learning experience range from machine-level understanding of brushless motor control, to PLC programming, machine vision implementation, AGV control for logistics optimization and up to factory discrete event simulation. The experience is further enriched by a full-day visit to a well-known smart automation academic/industrial competence center at European level: MADE lab at Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy.

The programme assessment is based on the evaluation of an individual report on the performed lab activities combined with a final pitch presented by teams of students in the last day of the summer school.

Cultural aspects shaping global business: focus China / 3 ECTS

2-3 online lesson during 11-22 July (17:30-20:30) / 29 August - 2 September in Lugano

This module is meant to analyze how to face innovation in a sustainable way and deal with complex operations and supply chain management decisions in a global context, with a specific focus on China. The students will be introduced to basic Chinese economy and culture in order to understand the differences between Switzerland and China, but also
how these differences can be the basis for a win-win cooperation.

The programme is composed by a series of seminars, both involving academic experts and practitioners having long experience about operation management in China, Industrial visits will be also organized in Switzerland and potentially virtual visits in China in order to underline differences and similarities concerning organizational and management practices.

The students will work on groups in order to deepen the knowledge about some peculiarities of China (technology development and adoption, regional development, etc.).
The assessment is based on the evaluation of a group report and group presentation combined with an open book written exam organized the last day of the summer school.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Manufacturing (IESMA): EIT Manufacturing Summer School / 5 ECTS

The IESMA summer school offers a unique opportunity for developing innovation and entrepreneurship skills for the manufacturing world in an international setting. Participants are immersed in a stimulating learning by doing experience during which innovation experts and companies bring hand-on expertise by launching challenges, support team project works and share their experience, while international lecturers provide state-of-the-art knowledge.

Company visits will enrich the pool of provided experiences. The EITM IESMA Summer School will be the opportunity for master students and professionals alike to broaden their network with potential European partners and to boost their abilities and competencies to become entrepreneurs able to empower the sustainable manufacturing of the future.

The programme assessment is based on the evaluation of the final pitch developed on the industrial challenges and presented by teams of students in the last day of the summer school.
