Geology Sector Services
The laboratory of the Geology Sector has the main instruments for geotechnical investigation of soils. We offer the possibility to trace the index properties and grain size of soils by sieving and sedimentation, perform consistency tests edometric tests, compaction tests and direct shear tests. All tests are performed according to the relevant Swiss standards.
Geological and geomorphological mapping
Detailed survey of the substrate and quaternary cover for geological-technical characterisation for civil engineering works and basic research.Geomechanical and structural surveys
Carrying out geomechanical surveys for engineering purposes (underground works, slope stability, roads and railways) aimed at defining the strength and deformability parameters of rock masses.Geotechnical site surveys and tests
Geotechnical description of borehole soils and performance of in-situ mechanical tests (scissometer and pocket penetrometer).Geotechnical laboratory tests
Geotechnical analysis and characterisation of soils by means of particle size tests, Atterberg consistency limits, direct (/residual) shear, oedometric, triaxial, permeability and compaction tests.Detailed cartography of instability phenomena
Cartography of areas affected by instability phenomena and morphostructures to support the definition and management of danger zones.Analysis of natural hazards and risks
Stability analyses of natural and artificial slopes, numerical modelling of processes and production of maps of natural hazards and risks.Dynamic penetrometric tests
Performance of dynamic penetrometric tests of the 'von Moos' type to determine the depth of the rock substrate up to 10-12 m and to define a soil stratigraphy based on dynamic penetration resistance. This test can be combined with surface wave spectral analysis (HVRS) and vertical electrical surveys (VES).Inclinometer tests
The laboratory has the main instruments for geotechnical soil investigation. We offer the possibility to determine the index properties and grain size of soils by sieving and sedimentation and to perform consistency tests. All tests are performed in accordance with the relevant Swiss standards.
