In the article written for the periodic column dedicated to educational topics, adjunct professor Sonia Castro Mallamaci discusses the importance, in today's society characterised by disinterest and a feeling of detachment from the themes of civil and political commitment, of bringing pupils closer to stories of civil courage with which they can identify. This is what the online didactic resource www.levitedeigiusti.ch seeks to do, starting from the stories of six individuals who, through acts of civil and human courage, were able to save lives and fight for a more just and democratic world.
"Retracing the lives of the Righteous means focusing attention on the watermark of history, on those who, by making a gesture of civic responsibility, contributed to keeping alive the ideals of justice, freedom and solidarity between peoples, [...] reviewing individual experiences of civic example in the past allows us to deconstruct the image of a history inexorably determined by the succession of democratic, economic and social crises, to find spaces for individual intervention in local micro-history and thus in a context closer to the pupils.
The teaching resources presented are based on the website retracing the events in the lives of the six protagonists by linking them to relevant historical events of the period. The creation of the online resource also coincided with the creation in Lugano of an area in Ciani Park, the Garden of the Righteous, where these people are commemorated with plaques near olive trees that symbolically remember them.
