Using cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and Industrial Internet Of Thing (IIOT) systems, REDETERMINE develops a decision-support platform to accelerate the design and development of new products through the optimisation of engineering polymer selection and testing and verification processes.
In an era where efficiency and sustainability are crucial, REDETERMINE offers an innovative solution to the challenges posed by the rapidly changing market and the increasing need for sustainable materials. The project, funded by the Swiss Innovation Agency (Innosuisse), not only increases the efficiency of existing processes, but also introduces a new paradigm in the plastic injection moulding industry, laying the foundations for reconfigurable and resilient production processes as context conditions change in the supply chain.
For the design, development and testing of the systems, REDETERMINE made extensive use of the SUPSI Department of Innovative Technologies' Mini-Factory, an innovative laboratory with a state-of-the-art IIOT production facility used to study and apply Industry 4.0 concepts.
During its activities, REDETERMINE delivered three different main results: 1) the development of a data model for the correct selection of materials and process parameters, 2) the design of a test machine for acquiring the necessary parameters from manufactured components, and 3) the development of AI algorithms for decision support to designers and process engineers. These elements work in synergy to reduce the time and cost associated with design changes, promoting faster adoption of sustainable materials and reducing the wasted resources and waiting time required for endurance testing.
"The major innovation of REDETERMINE lies in its ability to accelerate and optimise the validation process of new raw technopolymers, significantly reducing the testing and tuning cycles of process parameters," says Matteo Confalonieri, Lecturer-Researcher at ISTePS and project leader.
"The participation in REDETERMINE enabled us to introduce the use of artificial intelligence logic directly into the company's production processes, opening up new frontiers in terms of resource optimisation, waste reduction, reliability of testing processes, and integration of sustainable materials into our production processes,' emphasises Roberto Villa, Head of Research and Development at INTERROLL SA.
In conclusion, REDETERMINE represents a significant step forward in the direction of resilience and sustainability in the plastics industry.
