Urban reliefs: stories of manhole covers
SUPSI Image Focus
“Urban Reliefs, Stories of Manhole Covers” highlights an often-overlooked urban feature, showing how manhole covers, beyond their practical function, reveal shapes and details linked to the city’s history. Through images and research, the project invites us to rediscover the hidden beauty of everyday objects.
The project explores the aesthetic and cultural value of often-overlooked urban elements, such as manhole covers. They are only noticed when they cause noise, disruption or maintenance issues.
The work demonstrates that they can possess significant visual value. Through a published work, the project explores the history, characteristics and expressive potential of manhole covers, promoting a new focus on what usually goes unnoticed. Particular emphasis is placed on typography and textures, highlighted to reveal hidden details and creative possibilities linked to visual communication.
The initiative is aimed at those working in urban design and a wider audience interested in visual culture and the transformations of the urban landscape. The project straddles functionality and aesthetics, proposing a new way of observing and valuing the elements that make up everyday urban space.
