Experimental investigations of high rate fracture in concrete and rocks

Abstract Effects connected with high-rate (dynamic) fracture of concrete and rock materials is under investigation of numerous research groups around the world. Both the experimental studies of dynamic fracture or rock materials and theoretical modelling of this processes are performed by both sides submitting the current application. An example is a possibility to predict optimal (energy saving or maximising process speed) operational parameters for industrial machines working for fracture of bigger amount of material. Currently the central challenge in the filed is the development of robust and reliable fracture criterion that can be utilised to predict fracture of concrete and rock materials undergoing impact or explosive high-rate loads. The main obstacle for development of such a criterion is insufficient amount and quality of experimental results on high-rate fracture of concrete and rock materials. Planned joint research by Swiss and Russian partners is concentrated on implementation of new experiments with concrete and rocks loaded using Swiss (Modified Hopkinson bars) and Russian (magnetic pulse installation) equipment able of crating intense short high-rate loads.
