The mental health of workers: the role of job quality and physical activity

Acronimo ALLOY

Abstract This research aims to analyse the link between mental health, job quality and healthy behaviour among Swiss workers, in order to identify suitable actions that can reduce the risk of mental illness at work at the individual and organizational level. Protecting and promoting health of workers is a key legal and political priority, in order to prevent illness, reduced productivity at work and, ultimately, labour market exit, but little is done around mental health. A quantitative approach using the Swiss Household Panel will be employed, developing a Bayesian network model from available longitudinal data. We analyse the mediating effect of healthy behaviours that it is increasingly recognized to strengthen resilience of employees taking into account different occupational categories (with low/high occupational physical activity). Based on the results of the model, we develop support tools for employers and policymakers to help them identifying and alleviating psychosocial risk factors at work and to strengthen and protect employees’ health in Switzerland.
