Preparing freshwater biodiversity monitoring for the next decade

Acronimo WSFWBON

Abstract Considering that only 0.01% of the earth’s surface is taken up by freshwater, their ecosystems harbour a disproportionately large amount of the planet’s biodiversity. Freshwater biodiversity is currently declining at an alarming rate due to numerous human uses of the water and surrounding land. This requires efficient networks and approached to understand, monitor, and conserve freshwater biodiversity. The Freshwater Biodiversity Observation Network (FBWON, part of GEO BON) is an interdisciplinary network that addresses these requirements on a global scale. We propose an international workshop in Switzerland that for the first time brings together the FWBON Coordination Committee. Such a workshop is extremely important and timely to evaluate and align the FWBON activities to the findings from current activities of GEO BON, IPBES and the CBD working group on the post-2020 biodiversity framework, and to make progress towards its key goals.
