Multitrophic and multispatial biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships

Abstract In this project, we unite leading freshwater and terrestrial community ecologists and specialists on microbial and macroinvertebrate ecology from different biomes to study the relative importance of the different facets of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning in dendrotelmata. We use several field experiments to address these questions in two different temperate biomes (in Switzerland and Portugal) and two different tropical biomes (in India and Brazil). In addition to specifically testing the different facets of biodiversity, we will test how these BEF-relationships are impacted by the dominant stressors resulting from climate change, i.e. increasing temperatures and drying, in a multiple-stressor experiment. With these scenarios, we can test the role of biodiversity separately for resistance and resilience of communities and ecosystem processes.
