A remote engineering service for smart monitoring of ammonia synthesis plants using AI

Acronym AI-CARES

Abstract The aim of this project is to develop an innovative service called AI-CARES (Artificial Intelligence - CAsale Remote Engineering Service) for automated continuous monitoring and decision support, with the final goal of providing to Casale’s customers a timely and preventive maintenance service and a near real-time support during the ammonia synthesis process. The core of AI-CARES will be a set of artificial intelligence algorithms developed and implemented by IDSIA, which automatically turn streaming of operating data of the ammonia plants into useful information to detect or predict equipment failures and undesiderable working conditions, assess current performance and, if necessary, suggest actions to make the plant working in an optimal manner. Casale will benefit of this service by gaining opportunities to offer revamping of existing hardware; keeping a closer relation with the customer; improving and reducing the costly and labour-intensive process of failure analysis. A first version of AI-CARES for Ammonia Synthesis Loop is expected to be released by 2020 and embedded in all new ammonia plants as soon as the service will be extensively proven.
