Research is one of the main objectives of SUPSI, which has readily met the need to invest significantly in the field through the diversification of sources of financing, together with the augmentation and upgrading of services to researchers, while also providing coordinated support to the research groups (research axes).
This choice has proved to be fundamental: in fact, in the last five years external financing for SUPSI research projects has increased from 11.7 million francs in 2004 to 23 in 2015. Although total research funds have decreased proportionally in the past few years, financing from external parties has increased, particularly: CTI (from 1.1 to 5 million), European (from 1.3 to 4 million), and applied research investments made by companies in Ticino, in other Swiss cantons, and by some companies outside Switzerland. Such a substantial increase in research activity has implications for the future, which is also showing positive signs, when it will be necessary to focus even more closely on strategic issues, directing resources in this direction partially by means of the specific research axes.
