Education and training MSc degree cum laude in Computer Science. PhD degree in Applied Mathematics.

Work experience Before his PhD he had been working for two years as a software engineer for a main italian insurance group. During his PhD he was a consultant for SGS-Thomson in Milan. In 1997 he was hired as a post-doctoral fellow at Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA). In 2001 he got a tenure position as a researcher. He became a SUPSI Professor in 2009 and Scientific Director of IDSIA in 2019. He has founded and leads a group made of 30 full-time researchers about probabilistic machine learning.

Skills Data mining, knowledge-based systems, uncertain reasoning, foundations and applications of probability, and in particular imprecise probability, probabilistic-graphical models; applications to defense, environment, medicine, engineering, business.

Awards Marco Zaffalon has authored 140 peer-reviewed publications. He has been the President of Society for Imprecise Probabilities. He is Senior Area Editor for International Journal of Approximate Reasoning. He has been granted over 12 millions of francs for research from competitive funds.
