Researcher (w/m) in Laser based Manufacturing Processes

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), active in the fields of natural and built environment, economics, technological innovation, applied arts, social work and healthcare, learning and education, at the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) in Manno, in particular the Institute of Systems and Technologies for Sustainable Production (ISTePS), has opened a full time (100%) position for Researcher in Laser based Manufacturing Processes.

Tasks and responsibilities

Metal materials process engineering, including:

  • Process analysis, design, control and optimization.
  • Inspection management systems.
  • Technologies and equipment for corrosion control, monitoring, and prevention.
  • Welding and fabrication via laser based technologies, namely additive manufacturing and laser ablation.
  • Laser assisted cold spray.

Knowledgeable in the areas of:

  • Metallurgy, fitness for service and failure analysis.
  • Nondestructive testing.


  • Master in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or related field.
  • Ph.D. in related field constitutes a preferential condition.
  • Experience in image based monitoring and control techniques.
  • Experience in the field of Additive Manufacturing and Laser based technologies constitutes a preferential condition.
  • Excellent knowledge of software tools for mechanical modelling (CAD).
  • Good knowledge of programming languages, e.g. C/C++, Nastran, LabVIEW, Simulink, Matlab, MeshLab, HDevelop, Point Cloud Libraries.
  • Experience in writing and management of European and National Projects constitutes preferential condition.
  • Consolidated knowledge of spoken and written English and Italian, knowledge of at least one more Swiss national language constitutes a preferential condition.
  • Good social skills.
  • Ability to work in heterogeneous groups and to solve problems independently.
  • Good organizational skills and problem solving mindset.
  • Self-motivated, responsible and ambitious individual that is able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
