Researcher in the Social sciences

The Centre of Competence on Ageing (CCA) in the Department of Business Economics, Health and Social Care (DEASS) at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), is recruiting a Researcher in the Social sciences. This position is part of the new project AGE-INT (4 years): International Expertise of Switzerland for "Innovative Solutions for an Ageing Society". This cross-institutional project brings together expertise from the universities of applied sciences of St. Gallen (OST) and Bern (BFH), and the universities of Geneva and Zurich. The CCA team will focus on the risk of isolation and social exclusion in old age.

Activity rate: 80-100%. Expected start date: 1st May 2021 (or to be agreed).

Duties

  • Participate in primary data collection (interviews and focus groups) and secondary data analysis (quantitative) on the topics of isolation, loneliness, and social participation among older adults.
  • Take part in the creation of an inventory of best practices that promote the social inclusion of older adults.
  • Contribute to the scientific production related to the project (presentations at national and international conferences, scientific publications).
  • Support the management of the AGE-INT project and exchange with colleagues from the other universities involved.
  • Advance his/her scientific development in the field of research on ageing (in particular, on sociological issues).
  • Collaborate in the activities of the CCA.

Requirements

  • Master degree in Social sciences, a PhD in Social sciences is a preferential qualification.
  • Research experience and a strong interest in the area of ageing.
  • Excellent methodological skills (quantitative and qualitative, data collection and analysis).
  • Knowledge of Italian and English. Fluency in German is essential for this position.
  • Ability to critically evaluate existing literature and evidence, and synthesize the current state of knowledge.
  • Good scientific communication skills (oral and written). Very good organizational and inter-personal skills.
