Ph.D. student in Trustworthy Autonomous Systems

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) has opened a full time (100%) position for a Ph.D. student in Trustworthy Autonomous Systems, within the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA) at the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) based at the USI-SUPSI university campus in Lugano-Viganello (East Campus).
The contract will start 1 January 2023 or date to be agreed.

The position is framed within an engaging and exciting international research project on cutting-edge technologies for the next generation of intelligent, autonomous, and dependable vehicles. The position is based in the new USI-SUPSI Campus in Lugano-Viganello.


  • Research activities in the field of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), smart dependable systems, and self-X technolo-gies (e.g., self-driving, shealing, etc.).
  • Stochastic modeling and evaluation of smart systems under perturbations, threats, and other uncertainties, by using formalisms based on probabilistic graphical models such as Markov Chains and (Dynamic) Bayesian Networks and their extensions. Development of programs, algorithms and tools for trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) applications within autonomous vehicles and other safety-critical cyber-physical systems.
  • Writing project deliverables, scientific reports, and technical papers.
  • Participation in progress report and project review meetings, as well as in dissemination activities within selected conferences and workshops.



  • Master's degree in computer science, engineering, artificial intelligence, or closely related subjects.
  • Solid background knowledge in model-based software/systems engineering, stochastic modeling and machine learning tools, as well as willingness to learn new formalisms and techniques.
  • Strong motivation, result-orientation, and commitment to achieve outstanding results in research activities, and to publish quality papers in top conferences and journals.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Very good autonomy, organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work in a team and to engage in scientific dialogue.
  • Interest in teaching and tutoring students.


  • Familiarity and experience in developing AI and machine learning applications with a focus on dynamic Bayesian networks and probabilistic modeling approaches.
  • Strong knowledge and skills in reliability, safety, security, software engineering, risk assessment, hazard analysis, verification and validation, and international standards for the certification of critical embedded and real-time systems.
