Ph. D. Student in Human Robot Interaction

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) has opened a full-time (100%) position for a Ph. D. Student in Human Robot Interaction, within the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA) USI SUPSI, at the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) based at the USI-SUPSI university campus in Lugano-Viganello (East Campus). The contract will start on 1 January 2023 or the date to be agreed upon.

Tasks

  • Research activities in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics, with a particular focus on Human-Robot Interaction. The work is framed within the exciting European research project SERMAS (Socially-acceptable Extended Reality Models and Systems) on cutting-edge technologies for the next generation of social, intelligent, and secure agents assisting and/or cooperating with humans in everyday life activities.
  • Hands-on tests and evaluation of robotic simulations and experiments with both fixed and mobile platforms.
  • Implementation of AI-based and robotic algorithms.
  • Writing scientific papers (Journals and Conference Proceedings), project deliverables, and internal reports.
  • Public speaking and presentation to a wide audience (for example in conferences, workshops, and project review meetings).

Requirements

Essential

  • Master in Robotics, Computer Science Engineering, Informatics, or other relevant fields.
  • Outstanding background in the robotics and machine learning domain. The candidate should be highly motivated in extending her/his theoretical background and practical experience in both domains.
  • High motivation and commitment with a strong desire for research and publishing at top-ranked conferences and journals.
  • High programming skills, knowledge of the robotics operating system (ROS), and Linux-based operating systems.
  • Familiarity with Python programming language.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Good organizational skills, ability to work independently, plan the work steps, and be proactive on schedule.
  • Ability to work in a team and with colleagues and other members of the Institute and engage in scientific dialogue.
  • Strong motivation and commitment to fulfill research activities, milestones, and deadlines.
  • Interest in teaching and tutoring students is also required.

Preferred

  • Experience in projects involving Python and/or C++ language skills.
  • Familiarity with robotic systems and platforms.
  • Hand-on experience with mobile (wheeled and/or aerial) robots.
  • Experience with perception algorithms, especially vision-based frameworks.
  • Knowledge of deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and Tensorflow.
