Social Power – Save electricity by gaming with others in your local area

The tools traditionally used to guide energy consumers in terms of their household economies, such as financial incentives and information policies, often prove ineffective.  In fact, in order to foster long-lasting behavioural changes, it is a good idea to focus on stimulating levels of intrinsic motivation.

Social Power develops an interactive game that puts the residents of a district online, engaging them in challenges of a collaborative or competitive nature, with other households. The game is based on a smartphone app by which users can monitor the electricity consumption of their homes, and compare their results with those of other participants. The Social Power app was tested in 2016 in a "living laboratory" consisting of 120 households in Massagno (Ticino) and Winterthur (Zurich).
