SIMILE - Information system for the integrated monitoring of Insubric lakes and their ecosystems

The main objective of the project is to support the decision-making system and the definition of management policies for the area concerned (Lakes Maggiore, Como and Lugano) through an advanced information system, based on data from innovative approaches and systems for monitoring the lakes, including sensors, satellite maps and citizen science. The purpose of these systems is to complement and support traditional or discrete monitoring, extending the spatial and temporal scales of investigation and developing early warning systems with respect to some critical issues affecting lakes such as algal blooms. The project will last 36 months and will see technical and research bodies and management bodies working closely together, through a participatory process between partners, citizens, associations and local authorities.

Funded under the INTERREG Italy-Switzerland 2014-2020 Cooperation Program, the project sees the Institute of Earth Sciences (SUPSI) as the Swiss lead partner and the Polytechnic of Milan as leader on the Italian side. The other partners are the Office for the Protection of Water and Water Supply (UPAAI) of the Canton of Ticino, the CNR IRSA of Verbania and the D.G. ambiente, energy and sustainable development of the Lombardy Region.

INSUBRI.PARKS – The parks of the Insubrician band for the cultural and ecoturistic development of the cross-border territory

The project aims to develop a network of insubstantial parks, in fact it is increasingly evident that any effort in the cultural and eco-tourism fields must be addressed in a network between partners. For this reason, the Ticino and Lombard parks (Parco del Penz di Chiasso, Parco delle Gole della Breggia, Spina Verde, Campo dei Fiori, Pineta) of the Insubric area (which the project identifies as a geographical and cultural reference characterized by its own specific identity territorial and unity between Italy and Switzerland) intend to apply the network approach by overcoming the ideal border barrier. The Mendrisiotto and Lower Ceresio Regional Tourism Organization, as a partner, coordinates and supervises the project activities so that they are in line with the tourism policies of the Region and the Canton. SUPSI, as leader on the Swiss side, is responsible for the development and innovation activities related to the monitoring of tourist flows, the three-dimensional survey of objects of historical, cultural and tourist interest and finally the creation of a park management system.
