The VFF promotes major time and cost savings while increasing performance in the design, management, evaluation and reconfiguration of new or existing facilities, supporting the capability to simulate dynamic complex behaviour over the whole life cycle of Factory, approached as a complex long living Product.
The project defines and implements the underlying models and ideas at the foundation of a new conceptual framework designed to implement the next generation Virtual Factory, also meant to lay the basis for future applications in this research area. This approach identifies four key Pillars:
  • Reference Model of Factory Planning applying the key paradigm “Factory as a Product”, based on a holistic and scalable Factory Data Model.
  • VF Manager core enabling the synchronization of the external decoupled modules, making the framework open, extensible and scalable.
  • Decoupled Functional Modules implementing the various tools and services for the factory design, reconfiguration and management, which operate independently on the same Common Space of Factory Abstract Object.
  • Integration of contextual Knowledge at different layers for modelling a wider range of complex systems thus supporting decision making.
The proposed pillars foster the implementation of a holistic, modular, open and scalable Virtual Factory meant to achieve clear, well identified and measurable goals for the real production system according to quantitative indicators. Moreover, thanks to new open technologies, the VFF project will open access to Virtual Representation technologies to larger group of enterprises, including SMEs.
