The research allows the LMA to continuously update its knowledge and techniques and can thus be used for applied projects requested by third parties such as the rapid identification of microorganisms, the detection of microbial contaminants in production processes, the analysis of confirmation of pathogenic microorganisms, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of pathogenic and environmental microorganisms in different matrices, or molecular "fingerprinting" for epidemiological applications such as the determination of the origin of contamination.
In 2018, the sector increased its expertise in the field of new NGS sequencing techniques by acquiring, as already mentioned in 5.2, first an equipment of Oxford Nanopore Technologies (MinIon) and then a luminaire Illumina (iSeq 100).
A further important acquisition concerns a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer equipped with the CovalX system from the Spiez laboratory (Labor Spiez). In addition to serving as a support for the analysis of microorganisms, it will also open the analytical way for molecules, proteins between 50'000 and 1'000'000 m/z, hitherto not possible with the equipment provided. The first analytical tests are underway on project materials in collaboration with the BMI Conservation and Restoration.

In 2018, 46 identification and typing analyses were carried out for companies or external laboratories (TIBIO Sagl, LATI, SPASS, Cerbios, Bioma, Alpex) as well as for private individuals.
