Aura – AI adaptive typeface
An adaptive dialogue between typography and artificial intelligence
SUPSI Image Focus
Living alongside artificial intelligence is now inevitable, and its resemblance to humans is becoming increasingly apparent. Aura demonstrates how typography influences the message and how it is perceived, whilst the AI analyses the text and adapts the font, revealing the mechanisms that make this imitation possible.
The project explores the relationship between artificial intelligence and variable type design, both of which share flexibility and adaptability.
AI, now capable of recognising tone and linguistic characteristics thanks to Natural Language Processing, can make typography responsive to the textual context through interpretation.
AURA is the variable typeface, combining geometric structure with neo-grotesque influences, designed to react to content.
The project highlights how typography influences perception and how AI automatically adapts the typeface according to the text, drawing on the origins of AI and robotics. The texts of R.U.R. have been typographically interpreted by AI, with an interactive web page, and the result is an AI-controlled variable typeface, designed to enhance user experience and explore the mechanisms of modern communication tools.
