The idea of abstract imagery accompanying and interpreting music has been explored since the 1920s by pioneering experimentalists such as Oskar Fischinger and Norman McLaren.
This spirit of exploring new visual languages inspired Andreas Gysin and Sidi Vanetti, lecturers in the Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication (Department of Environment Constructions and Design SUPSI), to invite students to investigate the relationship between moving images and music through various techniques related to the field of visual communication, including video, 3D animation, stop-motion, generative graphics, illustration, and machine learning.
As part of the “Cross Media” course (third year of the Bachelor’s program), students worked in small groups to create ten audiovisual pieces, while also taking into account the biography of each selected artist. Particular attention was given to research, experimentation, and the dramaturgical aspects of each work, as well as to enhancing the visual culture and sensitivity of the students.
The course was enriched by listening sessions led by Jordi Fresco, who contributed to the selection of the ten tracks, offering a unique perspective on the contemporary Swiss electronic music scene.
Cinema as the ideal setting for a visual-sound experience
The ten works will be presented on the big screen at the LUX art house cinema in Massagno, forming a truly immersive visual concert to be experienced in the darkness of the theater, enhanced by the large screen.
“Music in Image”, now in its third edition, is open to all and free of charge (no registration required). It will take place on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 18:00 at the LUX art house cinema in Massagno. The event will be followed by an aperitif at Salone Cosmo, located directly beneath the cinema, during which the new edition of “Semester” will be presented (the magazine of the Bachelor of Arts SUPSI in Visual Communication, produced by students).
