Projects represent an exceptional opportunity to test an organization’s existing knowledge and to generate new insights that can be reused within the same project or in future initiatives.
Too often, however, the “knowledge” dimension is underestimated or poorly managed, mainly due to the lack of a clear strategy encompassing mandate, objectives, budget, techniques, processes, and roles.
In recent years, several efforts have been made to better address the role of knowledge within projects. Among these, the PMBOK® – Project Management Body of Knowledge, the world’s most widely adopted project management standard, for the first time included a specific process dedicated to “Managing Project Knowledge.”
Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go before knowledge management gains the full recognition it deserves within the broader framework of project management.
