Savannah's dream has always been to one day become a teacher. She now attends the Master in Secondary Education (middle school) at the Department of Education and Learning / University of Teacher Education at SUPSI. For her, the degree is an achievement, but also the beginning of a new adventure as a teacher of plastic arts and visual education.
Why this formation?
It was a very natural choice. I have known since I was about 14 years old, when I was a middle school student, that the career goal in my life would be teaching. This educational path is also appealing because it involves part-time attendance. This allows those who need it to be able to work simultaneously with their studies.
What did you learn during this course of study?
I am learning to plan and organise ideas and lessons. I have learnt to collaborate in a peaceful manner, to talk and listen, to create stable working ties that allow support networks to be woven between all the educational staff and families involved. In addition, I refined my knowledge of the subject matter, identified new interesting artistic paths and discovered new materials, courses and tools.
Any examples?
As someone who is very sensitive and attentive to emotional education, I was positively impressed by the proposed courses and workshops dealing with psychological and sociological topics within education. One course that particularly fascinated me was the one on ‘Adolescent Psychology’ as it was really engaging in terms of experience and above all necessary with respect to understanding the girls and boys we deal with on a regular basis as teachers.
What do you think are the necessary characteristics for those wishing to undertake the same Master's degree?
Broad shoulders, patience and willingness to get involved. The course may be destabilising at first because it is rich and full of situations. It is a course that stimulates constant reflection on oneself and others, and if one is not determined and sure of one's path, doubts may also arise. Despite this premise, I continue to recommend it because in return it offers really important richness and continuous opportunities for personal growth.
What would you like to do after graduation?
The degree is definitely a point of arrival but also a starting point! Point of arrival because I have been training for years to be able to teach, and point of departure because it is from here that a new adventure will begin, well aware that my role will involve constant training and studies even once I have graduated. After my studies, I would like to work right away, both at primary and secondary schools.
