This thesis examines the environmental impact of generative AI, focusing on “generative waste”. It reframes sustainability in visual design education, promoting slow, mindful, and responsible AI practices that heighten awareness of the digital footprint of generative processes.
This thesis investigates the environmental impact of generative AI, focusing on the concept of “generative waste”, the discarded outputs produced through iterative image creation.
It reimagines sustainability principles such as reuse and reduction within the context of visual design education, proposing a more critical and responsible approach to AI-driven creativity.
Through the lens of slow design and digital sustainability, the project promotes intentional, mindful use of computational resources and encourages designers to reflect on the ecological implications of their creative tools.
Aimed at emerging designers, the thesis advocates for practices that balance innovation with environmental responsibility, fostering a deeper understanding of the digital footprint inherent in generative processes. Ultimately, it seeks to inspire a new design culture in which creativity is not only experimental and expressive, but also conscious, ethical, and aligned with sustainable futures.
