SPORE
The dissemination of mycological knowledge
SUPSI Image Focus
The thesis stems from a connection with the Mesolcina and Ticino valleys and an interest in local knowledge such as mycology. The project highlights the role of mushrooms as a bridge between observation, culture and environmental education, transforming technical knowledge into a clear and engaging framework for young adults.
The thesis SPORE addresses the loss of knowledge transmission regarding fungi and the difficulties faced by societies in Ticino in engaging new generations. The aim is to analyse how visual design can make this heritage more accessible to a young-adult audience interested in nature and sustainability.
The research included the analysis of historical and scientific publications, consultation with local mycological societies, data collection via questionnaires, and the study of national and international publishing case studies. These steps highlighted limitations in traditional communication and enabled the definition of criteria based on scientific rigour, clarity, accessibility and visual quality.
The result is a printed publication that reworks scientific content into a contemporary and modular graphic format.
The project demonstrates how visual communication can bridge the gap between specialist knowledge and a young audience, paving the way for future developments such as educational materials, local partnerships and public outreach events.
