Andrea Crivelli, a 2022 Bachelor in Nursing graduate, recollects his choice to become a nurse and the technical and soft skills he acquired during his education at SUPSI. A rich and challenging path to becoming a health professional while growing as a person.
What profession are you currently in?
I am currently working as a nurse at the University Hospital of Zurich and completing a residency in critical care.
Why did you choose a university education? And why, in particular, the Bachelor's degree in Nursing from SUPSI?
The decision to pursue this training matured as early as my high school years, when I had the opportunity to closely observe the work of the nurse in his or her daily practice and to delve into the discipline-specific literature, with a particular focus on Anglo-Saxon and Canadian literature. This experience allowed me to better understand the challenges and satisfactions of this profession, fueling my interest and determination.
The choice to attend a university of applied sciences like SUPSI was also motivated by the desire to get closer to the world of work in a concrete way. The combination of theory and practice that characterizes these pathways is essential to train competent professionals prepared to face today's healthcare challenges. The course of study offered by SUPSI, culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, provides a unique opportunity not only to acquire solid practical skills, but also to access a wide range of advanced academic pathways, specializations, and diverse and challenging professional opportunities.
What elements of the training have impressed you the most? And what aspects were most useful for your profession?
The training I received proved to be an extremely enriching experience, both academically and personally. It did not just train me as a health professional, but had a profound impact on my personal growth, making me a more knowledgeable and well-rounded person. Some technical skills, which may seem fundamental at first, can also be acquired through practical field experience or self-study. What, however, cannot be acquired except through this path is the development of skills that go beyond “just” knowing how to do. Examples include introspection and self-evaluation, critical and reflective thinking, and essential soft skills such as stress management, analysis and problem solving, emotional intelligence, interprofessional working, and the ability to learn continuously. From the very first class, I was presented with post-formal thinking that guided and enriched my training. I believe that, ultimately, it is these soft skills that have had a lasting impact on my clinical practice, improving my communication, relationship, and collaboration with the various care actors involved.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue your path or profession?
To successfully meet the challenges of an ever-changing field such as health care, my advice is to undertake the Bachelor of Science in Nursing offered by SUPSI. It is a comprehensive, articulated and diverse educational pathway that places the human being at the center and adopts a salutogenic approach to care.
During this course, it will be crucial to cultivate humility, curiosity and kindness, which should become your “nursing lantern,” guiding you not only in your study but also in the daily practice of the profession.
