Using technology to train for the profession and develop professional skills

The use of instrumental movement analysis, which enables visualization of different muscle activations, and functional spectroscopy (TD-NIRS), which offers the possibility of visualizing brain activation during the execution of a movement, have enabled the creation of videos used for training activities on the analysis of sit-to-stand, supine-sitting transition, and reaching.
Such educational devices have been shown to be useful in developing the skill of knowing how to perform the analysis of a gesture and stand out as an innovative and distinctive aspect of modular training offerings.

In order to develop the competence to perform the analysis of a gesture and to know how to identify its different dimensions and components, a new teaching-learning format has been proposed since the academic year 2021-2022 to show through specially made instructional videos what really happens during a movement.
This has enabled students both to grasp aspects and elements that would otherwise be impossible to visualize with the naked eye and to correlate with each other the fundamental neurophysiological mechanisms, joint dynamics and muscular interventions necessary for the execution of a given motor act.
What has been achieved represents an innovation for the use of technological tools capable of detecting and acquiring kinematic data (Motion Capture Optitrack system), electromyographic signals (Due-Pro wireless EMG) and signals related to the activation of certain areas of the cortex thanks to the monitoring of brain hemodynamics (TD-NIRS functional spectroscopy).
The use of six infrared cameras, which detected the position of retro-reflective markers placed at specific anatomical points, made it possible to detect the movement of the different body segments involved in the gesture; electrodes placed positioned on the main muscles involved in the movement considered were used to record muscle activations.
Surface electrodes that measured the concentration of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin in a specific region of the cerebral cortex were used to capture the activation of brain areas.
The necessary technical support was provided by electronic engineer Corrado Cescon of DEASS's 2rLab Research Laboratory, Milan Polytechnic physics engineer Michele Lacerenza, and Milan-based PIONIRS company engineer Mauro Buttafava
