Lorenzo Caronni
Energy, Lightness, and a Strong Will to Learn
SUPSI Image Focus
Lorenzo Caronni attended the Liceo Scientifico Galileo Ferraris before choosing to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at SUPSI. Always passionate about scientific subjects, during this academic journey he discovered the world of energy, which fascinated him so much that he decided to continue with a Master of Science in Engineering with a specialization in Energy & Environment.
What drew you to the world of engineering?
I have always had a strong interest in scientific subjects. Choosing a science-focused high school felt natural, as did later moving towards the field I found most fascinating: mechanics. During my Bachelor’s, thanks to several dedicated courses, I discovered the field of energy, which sparked an even stronger interest and convinced me to continue my studies in this area.
Was there a challenge that helped you grow?
I would say that the collaborations with well-established companies such as MachSolutions and Casale were among the most meaningful experiences. The two projects I carried out in my third year allowed me to get a closer look at the professional world. I was always well supported by the SUPSI tutors, but being able to work on real projects requested by local companies was truly formative.
Is there a project or internship you remember with particular enthusiasm?
Definitely my Bachelor’s thesis project. In short, it formed an important part of a Casale project in collaboration with SUPSI for the sizing of a reactor to produce hydrogen from ammonia. Completing this work and achieving certain results was very rewarding, especially considering that my initial knowledge of chemical engineering was rather limited.
One piece of advice for those considering enrolling in Mechanical Engineering?
You don’t necessarily need to know exactly what to expect before enrolling: a study path can always surprise you, as it did for me, in a positive way. However, I believe there is one crucial point: choose this program only if you are willing to make your studies a real priority.
