Employee Profile

He studied at the University of Cagliari, graduating in Civil Engineering (summa cum laude) in July 1990. In Nov. 1990, he qualified as a professional engineer. In 1990/91, he transferred to the Policnico di Torino, where he received his PhD in structural engineering in 1994. In Italy, he obtained a National Scientific Qualification for the position of full professor in the sectors 08/B3 - Construction Technology and 09/A3 - Industrial Design, Mechanical Constructions and Metallurgy.
During 1992, he served as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cincinnati. During 1994 to 1996, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, followed by a position as a Scientific Agent. From 1997 to 2001, he was employed by a consulting engineering society as well as an accredited materials testing laboratory in Lugano. He has been a lecturer at SUPSI since 2000. Upon joining SUPSI full-time in February 2002, he became a professor in June 2004. Currently, he is a Full Professor of Mechanics of Materials and Structures.
His teaching covers the fundamentals of structural mechanics (statics, structural mechanics, dynamic behaviour of materials, and mechanics of materials). In research he concentrates on the dynamic behavior of materials, ESPI, anchors, impact behavior of structures. He chaired several sessions of international conferences and has been member of several technical committees. He serves as reviewer and editorial momber of International Journals.
He is author of more than two hundred papers (h-index=34, Scopus 2026).
Since 2019 he is in the Stanford University World's Top 2% Scientists list.
