Training is essential, especially when working in complex environments such as care homes. Participating in personalised training with your team is an opportunity not to be missed, capable of generating value on multiple levels: individual growth, group cohesion and the well-being of the residents
Where do you work and what do you do?
I am responsible for care at the Casa Bianca Maria Foundation in Cadro. It is a medical facility that takes in elderly people who are no longer able to live safely at home and need assistance and care from qualified staff.
What prompted the Foundation to request tailor-made courses offered by the SUPSI Continuing Education healthcare department? Which courses did you activate for your team?
The decision to co-design a targeted training programme with SUPSI arose from the need to ensure increasingly qualified care for residents and, at the same time, to support the professional development of our staff.
We recently launched two courses entitled: “Bientraitance: from theory to practice” and “Accompanying and living with people with dementia”. We had multiple objectives: to promote interprofessional work, provide specific tools and skills for the work context, improve communication between different professionals, enhance communication skills and increase awareness of one's role.
What is the added value of offering tailor-made courses? What impact has this had on your professional practice and on your team?
The added value lies in the customisation of the training programme to the target audience and the specific needs of the facility. Added to this is the opportunity to share real clinical cases with the entire team, drawing on the expertise of trainers who are experts in the field in a high-level training context: a significant plus. Another concrete benefit is undoubtedly the acquisition of knowledge and skills that can be immediately applied in the facility. Finally, training sessions also become opportunities for mutual learning, both professionally and personally.
Would you recommend this type of training to other organisations in the area, and for what reasons?
Absolutely! We are fully satisfied with the training programme designed with the SUPSI Continuing Education team in gerontology and geriatrics, as well as with the results in terms of improving the quality of care and support, and preparing staff to deal with the challenges they face every day at work.
