The School in brief

In a changing world dominated by an enormous amount of data, the artificial intelligence revolution poses significant challenges and opportunities to transform society and science.

Recent advancements in data science and machine learning have attracted academic, industrial, and public attention, shedding light on the need for highly specialized professionals in data science and artificial intelligence (DS&AI) who can develop and use data and human-like intelligence efficiently and ethically.

The purpose of the PhD school in Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (ADS&AI) is to combine the strengths of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) and the University of Applied Science and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), who have pioneered research in DS&AI for over two decades, to train highly qualified professionals capable of solving complex societal challenges and transdisciplinary problems using advanced methodological skills to become future leaders in applied research and innovation.

  • Open to exceptional Master's students from Universities of Applied Sciences and Universities wishing to pursue a PhD.

  • PhD research on a topic in applied DS&AI in one of the active research fields within SUPSI's Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) and funded by third-party research projects.

  • First joint doctoral training program, with activities organized and delivered by SUPSI and USI academics. 

  • 2 calls per year.

  • Joint management, admission and research supervision.

Application procedure

Access to the PhD school is currently available to either SUPSI or USI PhD scholarship holders. The PhD school does not provide PhD scholarships.
  1. Select a research topic and (co-)research advisor at the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) of SUPSI, applying for a PhD open position: https://www.supsi.ch/en/work-with-us.
     
  2. If successful, submit the application to the PhD school in ADS&AI to phd-adsai@usi-supsi.ch using the application form and attach the relevant documents.
     
  3. The application is evaluated first by the SUPSI DTI's Admission Committee.
     
  4. If approved, the application is forwarded to the USI's Faculty of Informatics PhD Admission Committee for their evaluation, along with a recommendation letter from the SUPSI Admission Committee.
     
  5. If the second evaluation is successful, the PhD candidate will be enrolled in the joint PhD school in ADS&AI and the USI's PhD program in Informatics with or without ECTS debits, depending on the candidate's background.

  • Application Deadline: 1st November 
  • Approximate Notification Date: 1st January
  • Approximate Start Date: 1st March

Fall Semester

  • Application Deadline: 16th May
  • Approximate Notification Date: 1st July
  • Approximate Start Date: 1st September
