The Institute is organized into six main research areas, although lots of other collaborations happens across these areas.

IDSIA has achieved notable success in applying Ant Colony Optimization to Combinatorial Optimization problems. The 1997 paper Ant colony system: a cooperative learning approach to the traveling salesman problem  by Dorigo and Gambardella has garnered over 6,000 citations to date.

Currently, IDSIA is at the forefront of Deep Learning research. Our neural networks team has triumphed in nine international competitions in machine learning and pattern recognition.

IDSIA is also a premier institute for research on imprecise probability. Its imprecise probability group is among the largest and most influential globally, contributing significantly to the theoretical foundations of probability and statistics while maintaining a strong track record in data mining projects with industrial partners.
