From the end of October and throughout November , the goal of #learningbygoing is to inform about the added value of a study period in another country, highlighting the personal and educational benefits of this experience. On the other hand, the importance of mobility during study is also recognized by the federal government and the cantons, which in 2017 defined a common national strategy to promote exchanges and mobility so that they become an integral part of educational and professional careers.
In Switzerland, the numbers of student mobility are far from the European average: people who choose to spend a period or internship abroad during their university studies are about 14-15%, compared with a 23% set as a target to be reached by 2030 for European students.
But there is no shortage of opportunities to catch up. SUPSI isalso among the 33 colleges of higher education that in collaboration with Movetia network to raise awareness of exchange opportunitiesor nationwide.
Andrea Gallo is a collaborator in the SUPSI International Office where she coordinates and supports incoming students. Among the various initiatives created to promote stays abroad, listening to the direct experience of those who have gone seems to be the most effective: "We want to make known as much as possible the experiences of students who have already gone on a mobility trip, and we do this by organizing moments of meeting where they can bring back their stories and reflections on the experience they have spent abroad. Their voices are the most authentic and the most effective in inspiring other male and female students to undertake the same kind of experience"
Although Switzerland is not part of the Erasmus+ program, Swiss university students ( or those enrolled in a Swiss university) can count on another type of financial incentive. "The SEMP (Swiss-European Mobility Program) Scholarship gives out a sum to cover living costs such as accommodation and usually lasts from three to 12 months. In addition, an additional lump sum can also be obtained to encourage sustainable mobility by encouraging the use of low-carbon means of transportation. This is the case with theGreen Travel Top-up initiative, which rewards those who choose low-emission transportation options, contributing to the sustainability goals of universities and mobility programs"
Presenting the benefits of a mobility period and answering questions from interested parties is also a matter of proximity. "The International Office interacts with students through departmental coordinators and coordinators who promote mobility through meetings, presentations and information desks. We are pleased with their efforts and see with satisfaction a growing interest in mobility. Their work is important in informing students and getting the message across that this is an experience that allows for personal growth, improves language skills, and expands the network of international contacts.
