Railway technology

Prepares graduates for key roles in the design, construction, maintenance, and management of modern railway systems. The program explores the fundamental elements of railway infrastructure, the principles of locomotive mechanics, and the complex interactions between vehicles and infrastructure. Significant attention is devoted to technological systems, with a focus on the analysis of electric traction and related drives, as well as an in‑depth study of railway signaling systems.

Railway technology

Prepares for roles in the design, construction, maintenance, and management of various railway systems, including traditional railways, high-speed rail lines, subways, and rail-connected transportation systems.
In the second year, students must indicate two preferred options for the in-depth profiles in order of priority. The activation of each profile is subject to reaching a minimum number of enrollments.

  • Educational differentiation

    The course is characterised by various forms of teaching in which particular attention is paid to the relationship between theory (lectures) and practice (exercises, workshops and projects). Integrated teaching methods are part of some courses and are gradually being developed.

  • Workshops

    The study programme has a strong practical and vocational orientation with numerous exercises and laboratory activities accompanying the theoretical lectures in the classroom. 
    The East Campus has numerous laboratories, machinery and innovative equipment for experimental activities.

  • Theses and projects

    Semester and diploma projects are carried out in cooperation with companies and institutions in the area to confront real issues and get closer to the industrial world.

  • Language

    Courses are mainly delivered in Italian; some subjects are offered in English.

  • Proximity to the student

    Faculty members are very attentive to the relationship with female students and concretize activities in favor of their support.
    Intensive preparatory courses are offered for new freshmen in order to level out incoming skills in math, physics and technical drawing. First-year remedial courses are also offered in the subjects of mathematics, physics and statics. Peer support through repetition activities is also encouraged.

The course provides mandatory daily attendance for all teaching activities in the first two semesters. From the third semester, attendance is optional for lectures but mandatory for all other teaching activities (tutorials, laboratories, seminars, certification tests, etc.). The course lasts for 3 years.

The contents of the published study plans reflect the currently planned structure of modules and/or courses and may be subject to changes over time, depending on the evolution of the educational offer. SUPSI offers those interested in embarking on a technical or economic education an optional mathematics test to check their level of preparation with respect to the prerequisites required to begin their training.
The test can be taken even before submitting the application for admission and should be seen as a support to help you start your studies at SUPSI in the best possible way.

Applications for admission are submitted exclusively by following the online procedure on the SUPSI Student Portal.

Candidates are eligible for direct admission if they possess one of the following diplomas or academic qualifications:

  • Professional Maturity in Technology, Architecture, and Life Sciences (MPT) or Professional Maturity in Economics and Services (MPES) with a Federal Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificate in a profession related to the field of study. Foreign diplomas from equivalent institutions are also recognized.

  • Technical Diploma (ST) or a qualification from another Specialized Higher Education Institution (SSS) related to the field of study.

Candidates holding a Federal High School Maturity or a recognized foreign High School Maturity diploma must complete one year of qualified professional experience and may enroll under the "Practical Year*" program.

Candidates over 25 with relevant education or work experience may be eligible for admission through a dossier-based evaluation, even without meeting standard entry requirements.

To apply for admission, you must follow the online procedure available on the Student Portal.

Once the procedure is completed, the applicant receives an automatic message of successful application to the email address provided.

Outcome of the application

All applications for admission are assessed by SUPSI. 
 
In the event of a positive response, SUPSI will send an email with instructions for confirming the application for admission. In the event of non-admission, the applicant will be contacted individually by the DTI Secretariat. 

Enrollment confirmation
After confirming your enrollment on the Student Portal, you must submit the following original documents to the SUPSI Directorate:
  • Completed and signed ASUP form
  • Signed enrollment confirmation
  • Diploma, or if not yet obtained, a certificate of attendance from your current school
You can monitor the status of your enrollment at any time via the Student Portal and download both the ASUP form and the enrollment confirmation even after completing the admission process (My Education > Submitted Admission Procedures).

To submit an admission application via the SUPSI Student Portal, you must have a Switch edu-ID account. If you already have one, you can log in to the SUPSI Student Portal using your credentials. Otherwise, follow the procedure described below.

To create the account, you will need to enter:
  • first name and last name
  • address
  • email (do not use email addresses provided by other schools that are active for a limited period of time)
  • password

After agreeing to the terms and conditions, a user account is created and a link sent to the given email address.

To activate the account, you must click on the link in the email and log in to Switch edu-ID for the first time. Once the account is active, you will be able to access the SUPSI Student Portal to submit your application for admission.
