Santiago Lusenti, after ten years of work and with entrepreneurial experience behind him, he decided to go back to school. He is a first-year student in the Bachelor's program in Engineering and Management.
Why did you choose this specific field of engineering?
I trained as a mechanical designer and wanted to discover something new. I chose management engineering to broaden my horizons. SUPSI was the natural choice, partly because of its proximity to Malcantone, where I live.
How do you feel about your studies?
There are certainly many unknowns, because I haven't studied for ten years. I wonder if I still have the mental flexibility that is always useful for tackling this kind of challenge. I'm 28 years old, still young all things considered, and I want to see if I'm ready for this new adventure.
What made you go back to studying?
Until two years ago, I was working as an employee in a company. Then I started my own business with a friend. At a certain point, our paths diverged and I decided to go back to school. I told myself that there is no wrong time to go back to studying, to grow and expand my knowledge.
What do you expect from this experience?
I expect to expand my network of contacts, especially in the industrial sector in Ticino. Contacts are essential for me, because a meeting can lead to an opportunity that can take you who knows where in the world.
So you're already thinking about going back to work?
Yes. I'm here to gain experience and, at the end of my studies, go back to work and, why not, invent new things, especially in the field of technology. The development of new technologies is happening very quickly, and I believe that even in a small town like Lugano, great ideas can be born.
What do you think your training will be like?
I think there will be a lot of development, miles of code, and a lot of data management. I expect to learn some programming languages better, such as Python, to name one, and maybe even delve a little deeper into some aspects of artificial intelligence.
What about your relationships with your new classmates?
I expect to make some great acquaintances and new friends. We're all in the same boat and, like it or not, we'll be sailing together for the next three years. I'm likely to be one of the “oldest” in the class. I just hope no one sees me as a mentor... (laughs).
