The two contributions, published in the scientific journal Horizons of the Fondo nazionale svizzero (FNS) and the Accademia svizzera delle arti e delle scienze (SATW), are part of an in-depth look at Ticino's research excellence.
Jürgen Schmidhuber, Scientific Director of the Istituto Dalle Molle di studi sull’intelligenza artificiale (IDSIA USI-SUPSI) and considered one of the fathers of modern artificial intelligence, has conducted pioneering research into the algorithms behind neural networks. Algorithms developed from this research are currently employed by Big Tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft.
The research of Alberto Ortona, Head of the Hybrid Materials Laboratory at the’Istituto di ingegneria meccanica e tecnologia dei materiali (MEMTi), focus on sustainable energy. Some of the projects currently underway concern concentrated solar thermal energy, the development of systems for heat recovery after ‘water splitting’ or systems for thermochemical colour storage.
