Fiume Spazio Tempo: un progetto per scoprire il Parco delle Gole della Breggia
In collaboration with the Department of Education and Learning / University of Teacher Training at SUPSI, the Park is creating new educational tools to promote the area. The first phase of the project has led to the creation of a handbook and a narrative podcast.
SUPSI Image Focus
The Breggia Gorge Park is a site of unique natural and historical interest. Along the course of the stream, traces of over 200 million years of geological changes are preserved in the stratification of the rocks. Along the approximately 12 kilometers of trails that cross the park, it is also possible to see the efforts made by humans over the centuries to harness the power of water and exploit the resources of stone. Within a green area covering 65 hectares, the landscape ranges from almost desert-like microclimates to ponds and gorges, in a succession of biotopes rich in flora and fauna.
These fascinating features make the Breggia Gorges Park an element of undoubted and recognized value in the territorial heritage of the Canton and the Lower Mendrisiotto, to be preserved and continued to be made known to the population. Fiume Spazio Tempo is part of the promotional activities organized/promoted by the Park. Created in 2024 from a collaboration with the Department of Education and Learning/University of Teacher Education at SUPSI, the project aims to promote the Park in an educational context as a place that integrates geological, historical, and cultural heritage values of national and international importance. Through diverse and innovative tools—participatory mapping, narrative podcasts, multimedia storytelling, workshops, and educational trails—Fiume Spazio Tempo aims to raise awareness of the Park's contents and educate people about the meaning of the place through engaging and immersive experiences.
The work of this first phase has resulted in two new publications for the Park, its inhabitants, and its visitors, with a particular focus on school classes in the Canton of Ticino.
Vademecum del Parco delle Gole della Breggia (Handbook of the Breggia Gorge Park)
The handbook guides the reader through the rich geological and historical-industrial heritage, relating the environmental and cultural impact of humans to the dynamics of the natural kingdoms that inhabit this space. This guide to the scientific and cultural contents of the Park, in pocket format and also available in digital version, aims to help visitors navigate its multiple levels of meaning.
The Lithomante. Geological audio memories
The original narrative podcast translates geological memories into sound testimonies thanks to an imaginary and mysterious device. In six episodes (“auscultations”), each dedicated to an area of the Park, the great geological changes, legends, voices of the inhabitants and those of the non-human realm are recounted: the river, the animals and the echo of time itself.
The Lithomante will be presented in a public listening session on March 4, 2026, at 8:30 p.m., in the evocative spaces of the Torre dei Forni of the former SACEBA cement factory. The listening party will conclude with a live coding performance that will use sounds recorded in the Park and manipulated in real time.
The digital version of the handbook and the Lithomante podcast are available on the project's official website www.fiumespaziotempo.ch
The next steps in the project involve the implementation of teaching materials developed from the Scuola Scoperta training course. Explorations and experiments in the Parco delle Gole della Breggia (www.scuolascoperta.ch), created in 2025 to accompany teachers in the co-construction and experimentation of interdisciplinary educational paths. A second edition of the course is planned for 2026/2027.
Finally, in the coming months, a competition for schools and the general public will be launched, entitled “Postcards from the Park.” Participants will be asked to design an illustrated postcard that includes original and insightful multimedia narratives about the Breggia River and the Park.
