The Department of Education and Learning / University of Teacher Education's Master in Secondary Education qualifies candidates to teach one or two subjects in secondary schools (in this case, mathematics and possibly a second subject).
In order to be admitted to the Master's course, candidates, in addition to holding a Bachelor's degree, must have obtained certified subject training (measured in ECTS credits - European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) in the subject, or subjects, they intend to teach. The credits required for admission to the training are 110 ECTS if one intends to teach only one subject, respectively 60 ECTS for each discipline if one intends to train in the teaching of two subjects. Previous training must also cover specific subject areas.
On the basis of the new admission procedure introduced and the subject courses set up, candidates who wish to qualify to teach mathematics with previous training in the subject below the required credits (but at least 80 ECTS for one subject and 30 ECTS in the case of dual subjects), or whose training in mathematics does not cover all the required subject areas, may be admitted and will be required to undertake disciplinary remedial courses in order to achieve the required credits by the end of their training. Credit recovery courses take place at the Department in parallel with regular Master's training; the planning of the courses to be taken is the responsibility of the Department and is functional to cover all the areas envisaged.
Master's training takes place on a part-time basis; it normally lasts two years for those training in a single subject, respectively three years for those training in two subjects.
Further information on the objectives and teaching methods, the structure of the training, the study plan, the requirements and the admission procedure can be found on the Master in Secondary Education training pages.
