Marco Altomare's research investigates the relations between anthropic activities and the natural environment in the Piano di Magadino between the early Middle Ages and the beginning of the 20th century. In this historical reconstruction, the constituent elements of the environment of the Piano are highlighted: one of natural origin, the Ticino river, with the variations of its course and the progradation of the delta, and the other of anthropic nature with the transit routes, primarily waterways, as a vital segment of the transalpine route.
The relationship between these elements structures the spread of settlements and the economic and social life of the region, characterised by subsidiary local agriculture and vertical nomadic practices, supported by commercial activities related to river and lake transport.
The shift from the prudent communal management of resources to the predatory practices of the timber trade opens up a current reflection on the impact of social and economic structures on the territory and its conception.
