Prof. Loris Roveda earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 2015, following an academic path focused on mechatronics and industrial automation.
Between 2015 and 2019, he worked as a researcher at the Institute of Intelligent Industrial Systems and Technologies for Advanced Manufacturing (STIIMA-CNR), where he deepened his expertise in collaborative robotics, adaptive planning, and artificial intelligence applied to manufacturing systems.
Since 2019, he has continued his research career as a SUPSI Researcher at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA USI-SUPSI), contributing to innovative projects in safe human–robot interaction, predictive control, and intelligent systems. In 2022, he was appointed Senior Researcher at SUPSI.
Alongside his research, Prof. Roveda has been actively involved in teaching and academic coordination in the fields of engineering and robotics, collaborating with several industrial and academic institutions at both national and international levels. His work stands out for its interdisciplinary approach, combining control methods, machine learning, and predictive modeling to make human–robot collaboration more natural, safe, and efficient.
Among his most significant publications is Model-Based Reinforcement Learning Variable Impedance Control for Human-Robot Collaboration (2020), which introduces an adaptive controller based on learning and predictive dynamic models to optimize collaborative interactions.
He has also participated in numerous European and Swiss-funded research projects, making a major contribution to technology transfer toward the industrial sector and promoting an integrated vision linking scientific research, technological innovation, and advanced industrial applications.
In 2023, Prof. Roveda completed a visiting research period at the Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL) at Stanford University, directed by Prof. Marco Pavone. Since the same year, he has been included among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in AI, according to the Stanford ranking, in recognition of the impact and quality of his scientific work.
The Direction of the Department of Innovative Technologies congratulates Prof. Loris Roveda on his appointment and extends its best wishes for a future filled with professional success.
