My academic journey: between IT, practice and international experiences
SUPSI Image Focus
Samuel is a Master of Science in Engineering student with a profile in Data Science. Throughout his years of study, he has enjoyed the hands-on approach of the Department of Innovative Technologies, the opportunity to carry out international experiences, and university life in a stimulating environment such as the East Campus.
How did you get to know SUPSI?
In 2018, I became aware of this reality. I attended several open days at other universities and polytechnics, but they did not convey to me the impression of being welcoming and stimulating environments. Although at first the DTI location was still in Manno, in a rather outdated building, I was won over by the open day and student testimonials, thus deciding to enroll.
What do you study and how would you describe your academic programme?
I pursued a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Engineering and am finishing a Master's degree in Data Science.
In general, I would describe my path as effective because I gained knowledge that enabled me to find employment even before the end of my studies, and practical because in most of the modules theoretical foundations are given, but the focus is on practice to gain concrete skills. While I did not encounter any particular difficulties, I would, however, have preferred more in-depth study of some subjects.
What is the strongpoint of your course?
As I have already mentioned, the biggest advantages are SUPSI's hands-on approach and the ease of finding employment at the end of one's education, provided one successfully completes it. Another aspect that should not be underestimated is life within the university environment: with the new Viganello Campus, my university experience has clearly improved since, even outside the classroom, it is very easy to come into contact with interesting people and activities.
What are your goals for the future?
My answer to this question is always the same, as simple as it is emblematic.I want to do something that stimulates me, allows me to pursue my ideas, and makes me happy. Computer science has always been one of my passions, so I will stay in this area.
Is there a particularly significant experience you would like to tell us about?
I have had several significant experiences over the years at DTI. One of the most important was the trip I took to Taiwan and China through the Asia Module. Not only was I able to experience a culture completely different from ours, but I met people and visited places that helped make the experience even more educational and memorable.
