Scholarships
There are different types of scholarships for students.
There are different types of financial support for students. The main distinction is between supports that do not require repayment (grants) and those that do require repayment (loans). Depending on the type, the relative requirements for support also vary.
Financial support for students is granted in two areas: public and private.
In the public sector, municipalities, cantons and the federal government provide grants to support students who meet certain requirements. The canton may also grant, in addition to or instead of a grant, a study loan repayable under favourable conditions after completion of training.
As far as private support is concerned, scholarships granted by private foundations are mostly intended to cover part of the costs of study. In addition to scholarships for trainees, there is the possibility of applying for non-profit loans also granted by some Foundations and repayable on favourable terms after completion of training.

Scholarships granted by the Canton of Ticino
The scholarship system in Switzerland is regulated at cantonal level; each canton has its own legislation on the provision of grants and loans. The personal and financial conditions that justify the granting of a scholarship are defined very differently from canton to canton. In Ticino, the Department of Education, Culture and Sport provides study grants to Swiss and foreign students whose determining domicile is in the canton of Ticino. The information brochure and application forms (in Italian) can be downloaded from the Study aid office website (content in Italian).

Municipal Scholarships
Many municipalities provide funds that can be accessed. Applicants should enquire directly at their municipality and follow the procedure indicated by them. It is advisable to make contact by phone or in person to ask for information and not just consult the online site.

The federal government also allocates, through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students, various types of third-cycle scholarships for researchers of all disciplines and partly for foreign artists.
