Born in 1977, Alberto Piatti has been with SUPSI since 2003. After graduating in mathematics from ETH Zurich in 2001, he obtained his teaching qualification in mathematics for cantonal middle schools the following year. He also holds advanced study certificates in management and quality assurance.
Between 2003 and 2009, he was a lecturer-researcher at the Department of Innovative Technologies at SUPSI and a contract lecturer at the University of Lugano (USI), where he obtained his doctorate in 2006 with a thesis at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence USI-SUPSI. During this period, he taught mathematics in various disciplines and carried out advanced research in the field of mathematical modeling of human knowledge.
In 2010, with the integration of the University of Teacher Education into SUPSI, he took on the role of head of training and lecturer-researcher in mathematics education in the Department of Education and Learning. In 2017, he was appointed Director of the department, a role he held for two four-year terms.
In 2021, he was awarded the title of Professor in MINT Discipline Teaching, which was updated in 2024 to Full Professor as part of the SUPSI professorial career review. His main areas of research are the development and assessment of computational thinking skills, with a particular focus on compulsory school pupils.
At the federal level, Alberto Piatti has held positions of responsibility in various boards of swissuniversities. He is currently a member of the Rectors' Conference of Swiss Universities of Teacher Education and, since 2022, a member of the Swiss Accreditation Council.
During his 16 years with the DFA/ASP management team, the last eight of which as director, Alberto Piatti has demonstrated great skill and commitment in overseeing the gradual transition to tertiary education for teacher training in Ticino, in line with the strategies of all Swiss teacher training colleges. At the same time, he has promoted numerous projects that have made it possible to meet the demand for teachers in the various school systems in the Canton of Ticino.
The SUPSI Council has decided to appoint Alberto Piatti as the new Director of Continuing Education because of his in-depth and cross-disciplinary knowledge of the university's mandates, his national academic recognition, and his proven ability to navigate complex networks, both within and outside the institution.
Alberto Piatti will take over as Director of Continuing Education at SUPSI on January 1, 2026, succeeding Nadia Bregoli, who is retiring.
In her more than 20 years at the institution, first as head of the Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) and later as Director of Central Services, the current Director of Continuing Education has demonstrated great foresight and strategic vision, interpreting and anticipating trends in the world of education and work; These are fundamental characteristics for a mandate that thousands of professionals turn to every year.
In addition to the vast and varied catalog of courses, which evolves according to local needs and global trends, under her leadership SUPSI has introduced Short Advanced Studies (SAS): short, flexible, and transferable qualification programs that can also be used in other Advanced Studies courses (CAS, DAS, and MAS), in which SUPSI has played a pioneering role and which are now offered by many Swiss universities.
The SUPSI Council expresses its sincere and heartfelt thanks to Nadia Bregoli for her substantial contribution to the institution and congratulates Alberto Piatti on his new appointment, wishing him all the best for this new professional challenge.
With Alberto Piatti's move to the Continuing Education, the call for applications to replace him at the helm of SUPSI's Department of Education and Learning / University of Teacher Education is now open, with a deadline of December 11.
