Prof. Alessandro Antonucci obtained his Master of Science in Theoretical Physics from the University of Milan in 2002. He subsequently continued his academic career at the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Lugano, where he earned a PhD in Computer Science in 2008. In 2020, he also obtained a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Teaching from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) in Lugano, a recognized teaching qualification.
Since 2008, he has been active in academic and research activities at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research (IDSIA USI-SUPSI) of the Department of Innovative Technologies. Initially working as a scientific collaborator, he obtained the position of Senior Researcher-Lecturer in 2012.
At the Dalle Molle Institute, since 2015 he has coordinated a collaboration with Armasuisse (Science and Technology), which includes numerous applied research projects in the field of knowledge-based systems and reinforcement learning. In addition, he coordinates collaborations with industrial partners such as UBS and Swiss Post, as well as Innosuisse projects with startups from the Ticino region. He supervises several doctoral students and is actively involved in teaching activities at the Department of Innovative Technologies. In 2021, he received the Credit Suisse Award for Best Teaching.
He is the author of more than 100 scientific publications on robust probabilistic methods for Artificial Intelligence in international journals and conference proceedings. He serves as Area Editor for the journal International Journal of Approximate Reasoning (Elsevier) and is a member of the program committees of major international conferences on Artificial Intelligence. He has served as chair of the conferences PGM (2016) and ECSQARU & ISIPTA (2017), and as track chair of FLAIRS (2020–2022), KR (2022), and ICANN (2024), as well as editor of several conference proceedings and special issues for Elsevier and Springer journals.
