The Bachelor in Leisure Management trains professionals with in-depth organisational and management skills specialised in the Leisure sector (sport, events, cultural and creative industries, tourism, entertainment, etc.). The SUPSI Bachelor of Science in Leisure Management develops technical, organisational and management skills to operate within the leisure sector (sport, events, cultural and creative industries, tourism, entertainment, etc.) through an experiential approach and strongly practice-oriented modules.

The student also develops both scientific-methodological skills in tackling complex problems and relational-aptitude skills to confront and operate in an ever-changing ecosystem characterised by a multitude of actors.

Language skills (in particular English and German) enable the student to move independently in local, national and international contexts.

Graduates of the SUPSI Bachelor's Degree in Leisure Management are able to work within organisations that are differentiated by field (sport, events, cultural and creative industries, tourism, entertainment, etc.), by type (profit and non-profit companies, associations, foundations, public administration), by size and by geographical market (local, national and international). They can work within sports companies or federations, tourism bodies, museums or cultural associations, companies active in entertainment and event organisation.

The SUPSI Bachelor's Degree in Leisure Management allows access to Master's degree programmes in related fields offered by Swiss or foreign universities, e.g:

SUPSI Image Focus

The first part of the Bachelor's programme aims to develop competences in the Leisure sector in abroad and integrated manner, enabling specific preparation on the most relevant topics. From the second academic year onwards, students have the opportunity to choose a number of optional modules, and relations with partners in the professional world are intensified through the field project (teaching project carried out in collaboration with local companies). The last semester of study consists of an internship in local, national and/or international companies, organisations and associations. The final thesis will conclude the course.

    Local, national and international collaborations and partnerships The training model has a strong orientation towards practical skills, and for this reason there are numerous collaborations with local, national and international organisations and companies in which to carry out: field projects, training internships and other educational projects such as the Sprint project.

  • Language skills

    The course includes some lessons in English and language courses throughout the course of study in order to enable graduates to work in international contexts. The Bachelor's degree also allows graduates to acquire C1 Cambridge English and B2 Goethe German language skills, potentially leading to international and recognised certificates in all areas of work.

  • Teaching methods

    In addition to traditional classroom lectures, case studies, special lectures/testimonials from the professional world, group work, development of personal projects, visits to companies, institutions and associations are offered.

  • Flexible forms of learning

    Lectures are delivered in traditional face-to-face form, or in other modes, such as distance learning and crash courses, which allow for diversified moments of interaction

  • Mobility

    Possibility of going abroad for one or more semesters as part of the SEMP - Swiss-European mobility programme (formerly Erasmus).

Four month of practical internships

The internship is a period of professional practice of at least four months during the last semester of the Bachelor's degree course, which enables students to deal with local, national or international realities, putting into practice what they have learnt throughout their studies. The internship offers students the opportunity to get to know the different working realities of the leisure sector and the various actors involved, to apply the concepts, methodologies and tools learned during the course in a real context, as well as to plan, implement and evaluate concrete projects and gradually assume professional responsibilities.  

The internship is a 24 ECTS module and is an integral part of the Bachelor in Leisure Management course of study. The allocation of internships is determined in consideration of the student's course of study.
At the end of the work placement, the students receive an evaluation from the host organisation and have to write a report describing the experience, with strengths and weaknesses, the skills acquired, as well as some reflections on what they experienced.

The first step in approaching the professional world

SUPSI Image Focus

The Field Project is the first step in bringing the student closer to the professional world. It is a didactic and practical project, carried out in groups, in collaboration with companies/organisations in the area and with the scientific-methodological accompaniment of a lecturer from the degree course.

The partner company/body assigns the students a real challenge, providing all the necessary information and guaranteeing the necessary support for the successful realisation of the work. The project carried out is assessed by both the lecturer and the company through a written report and an oral presentation.

A Design Thinking model

The Sprint Project is a five-day design thinking model that allows final-year Bachelor students in leisure management to test themselves with concrete challenges in cooperation with local companies, associations and/or organisations. Starting with a real challenge and the definition of the objectives, in one week the students, in groups of 7/8 people, arrive at concrete solutions and the realisation of an initial prototype that is tested with clients in order to verify its goodness and effectiveness. A highly practical and intensively organised module, where creativity, scientific approach and methodology converge.
The week begins with the definition of the project goals and the search for possible solutions. Then the best solution for the project is voted on, which must then be turned into a storyboard on Wednesday and into an actual prototype on Thursday. On the last day of the project, the prototype is tested with customers or people close to the partner (partners, potential customers and/or users, etc.). Finally, the week ends with the presentation of the project to the partner involved.  
The Sprint Project module involves the limited use of devices such as computers, tablets and phones, as it aims to stimulate the students' creativity as much as possible, without them being influenced by the external environment. During the course of the week, the students must also write a report on their experience. 
 
The following are some companies/associations collaborating in the Sprint Project module: 

The Bachelor's degree includes two modes of study that allow for the acquisition of 180 ECTS and a short training of 90 ECTS, in accordance with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). One ECTS credit corresponds to about 30 hours of study (lectures, individual and group projects, assisted and individual study).

3 years of full-time training. 

Classroom lessons are complemented by professional internships, distance learning, group work and the development of personal projects. During their training, students have the opportunity to get to grips with the world of work through expert opinions, the second-year Field Project, the third-year internship and other real-life projects in the modules. Classes are generally scheduled from Monday to Wednesday, with some modules spread over the whole week (crash courses). On the other days of the week, individual or group workshop activities are planned.

4-6 years of part-time Bachelor's degree for students who wish to maintain their family, artistic, sporting or professional commitments (not necessarily in fields related to the Bachelor's degree) while pursuing their education.

This commitment must be at least 50%.  The study plan envisages completing the 1st year of the full-time (FT) course within two academic years and in the following years, according to an individualised and agreed study plan, the 2nd and 3rd FT years. An internship during the last semester is also envisaged in this mode of study.

2 years of full-time training.
Graduates of the Higher Specialized School of Hotel and Tourism (SSSAT) who have graduated within the past 5 years, and passed the ranking examinations, are eligible for a passerelle agreement, with recognition of 90 ECTS credits.

Course FB Teachers

Given the limited number of places available, all candidates for the Bachelor in Leisure management must take a ranking examination consisting of a first written part (analysis of a topical text and English exam) and a second aptitude test (oral). 
For the purposes of federal and cantonal funding, a limited number of candidates who are not residents of Switzerland are admitted to each degree program with a DEASS ranking examination. For the Bachelor's degree in Leisure Management, in principle this quota amounts to 20 percent; exceptions are considered legitimate when compliance with the 20 percent non-resident quota would not allow the needs (in terms of graduates) of the Ticino labor market to be met, given the available places offered by the degree program.

The application for admission is submitted exclusively by following the online procedure available on the Student Portal.
 
  1. After a few days, once the application has been evaluated, the outcome of the evaluation will be communicated by e-mail: admission to the ranking list, preliminary oral examination (for candidates on dossier) or non-compliant application.
  2. Once the registration deadline has closed, candidates admitted to the ranking examination will receive an official invitation to the written test with details of how it will be conducted. Based on the results of the written examination, the candidates who will be admitted to the oral examination will be selected. 
  3. On the basis of the scores obtained in the oral examination, the final list of candidates admitted to the Bachelor in Leisure management will be drawn up.
  4. Those who are admitted will receive a communication with the necessary information to definitively confirm their registration.

To enter the degree course, there is a two-part graduation examination:
  1. first written part comprising:  - analysis of a current affairs text related to the field of study, analysis of graphs and tables, and some general culture questions. The test doesnot require any specific preparation, however being up to date in the field can be of help; the test also assesses knowledge of the Italian language for candidates whose mother tongue is not Italian  - English test: comprehension, writing and listening questions. Candidates who can prove, by means of international certificates or certificates obtained at other universities (issued less than three years ago), that they have a level of English equal to or higher than B2 may request exemption from the test. The exemption is not automatic and can only be granted after careful evaluation of the certificates sent to the following address: deass.leisure@supsi.ch  
  2. second aptitude part: oral interview aimed at investigating personal aptitude, motivation and perception of future educational and professional activity.
 
The ranking examination takes place in the weeks following the closing of entries, between the end of May and the beginning of June.

Holders of a Professional Maturity Certificate in Economics and Services (MPES) or a Cantonal Business Maturity Certificate from Bellinzona gain direct access to the SUPSI Bachelor's Degree in Leisure Management, subject to passing the entrance examination.
 
Holders of other baccalaureates are required to have a period of previous professional practice consistent with the content of the study programme of at least 900 hours (between 6 and 12 months).

Application on dossier
Candidates over 25 years of age may be admitted to the Bachelor's degree course without the required qualifications, but considered by Management to have significant training and experience appropriate to the field. They arerequired to take a preliminary oral examination on the fundamentals of management, the positive outcome of which will allow them to enter the ranking examination.

Fee
The fee is CHF 1600 per semester, respectively CHF 800 for students benefiting from the application of the Intercantonal Agreement on Universities of Applied Sciences and Arts (Swiss nationality or tax domicile in Switzerland or Liechtenstein). Specific agreements apply for students resident in Campione d’Italia.
Administrative and logistical costs
A flat fee of CHF 200 per semester is also required as a contribution to administrative and logistical costs.
Application fee
A fee of CHF 200 must be paid online when applying for admission. This fee is neither refundable nor deductible from the semester fee.
