Prof. Dario Piga received the Master of Science in Mechatronics Engineering in 2008 from Politecnico di Torino, and the Ph.D. in Systems and Control Engineering in 2012 from the same institution. He held postdoctoral research positions at Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) from 2012 to 2013 and at Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands) from 2013 to 2014. In 2014, he joined the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA) as a researcher.
From 2015 to 2017, he served as an Assistant Professor at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, where he was also a member of the Academic Council as a representative of the faculty. In 2017, he returned to IDSIA as a Researcher, and in 2020 he was promoted to Senior Researcher, a role in which he has carried out advanced research in modeling, system identification, and optimal control of dynamical systems.
At IDSIA, he founded and currently leads the LEON (Learning for Optimization and Control) research group, which comprises 16 researchers, including senior researchers and Ph.D. students. He has coordinated and served as Principal Investigator for several research projects funded by the European Union and Innosuisse, focusing on the development of artificial intelligence algorithms across multiple application domains, including manufacturing, aerospace, and automotive. At SUPSI, he is also co-director of the CAS in Generative AI and of the DAS in Machine Learning for Intelligent Systems: Development and Applications.
He is the author of over 180 scientific publications in international journals and conference proceedings. He has served as a member of the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society (2018-2025) and of the Conference Editorial Board of the European Control Association (2019-2025). He is currently Associate Editor of the international journal Automatica (Elsevier). He served as Vice-Chair for Social Media of the IFAC Technical Committee on Modelling, Identification and Signal Processing (2023-2025) and, as of 2026, he serves as Chair of the IEEE-CSS Technical Committee on System Identification and Adaptive Control.
The Direction of the Department of Innovative Technologies congratulates Prof. Dario Piga on his appointment and extends its best wishes for a future filled with professional success in his role as Associate Professor.
